DMA Failed to Buy One But Brings Pair Together – After 200 Years

The original British owner sold the two paintings by seascape artist Claude-Joseph Vernet to different collectors in 1806. One was presumed lost, the DMA raised millions to buy it when it was rediscovered and put up for auction. The DMA was outbid — but got it on loan anyway.
