Roger Shimomura is a nationally recognized artist who makes Pop art paintings that juxtapose classic Japanese woodcuts (u-kiyo-e) with brash American imagery from comics and advertising. A third-generation Japanese-American who spent time in one of America’s internment camps during World War II, Shimomura has used cartoons and woodcuts to satirize racial stereotypes and complicate the political-visual exchange between cultures. He has had more than 125 solo exhibitions around the country and has been a visiting artist or lecturer at more than 200 universities.
The Return of the Yellow Peril is a major survey of Shimomura’s work at the Crow Collection of Asian Art through Aug. 9.
